- Gates is still active at Microsoft despite not being the day-to-day CEO.
- Bill Gates has made it clear that he is not impressed with NFTs and cryptocurrencies, claiming the are based on the “greater fool” theory.
- Gates believes generative artificial intelligence mirrors the future of AI.
While the concept of a Web3 seems appealing to most tech gurus and businessmen, Microsoft founder Bill Gates appears unimpressed. Gate isn’t convinced about the importance of Web3 or the fascination with NFTs. The billionaire believes the technology is not revolutionary.
Gates expressed more confidence in artificial intelligence than blockchain after a Reddit user quizzed him on what technology has similar potential as the internet did at the turn of the century. In response to the question, the philanthropist stated
AI is the big one. I don’t think Web3 was that big or that metaverse stuff alone was revolutionary but AI is quite revolutionary.
The Microsoft founder repeatedly referred to AI as the most exciting technology of the present moment while speaking about current tech trends in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session. Gates also had good words for “generative AI,” which is the part of artificial intelligence that creates content. He expressed his delight in the new AI innovation ChatGPT, adding that the product “gives a glimpse of what is to come.”

Gates also opened up about plans to integrate AI into his philanthropic work. He said,
Thinking of it in the Gates Foundation context we want to have tutors that help kids learn math and stay interested. We want medical help for people in Africa who can’t access a Doctor.
Being one of the pioneers of modern tech, Gate’s opinions on technological innovations are highly respected. In 2021, Gates predicted that the majority of online meetings would transition from 2D platforms like Zoom and Teams to the metaverse in a couple of years. He also expressed his admiration for how virtual reality technology enhances the experience of online meetings. The business magnate has, however, made it clear that he disapproves of cryptocurrencies and NFTs.
Microsoft has been making inroads into the metaverse in a bid to actualize Gate’s predictions about virtual meetings. The tech giant made its meeting apps accessible on Meta devices and helped form the Metaverse Standards Forum alongside Meta, Alibaba, and Sony.
I have covered some exciting stories in my career as a journalist and find blockchain-related stories very intriguing. I believe Web3 will change the world and want everyone to be a part of it.
